Established in 1979 theAIPD (Associazione Italiana Persone Down) is a point of reference for families, social workers, healthcare professionals and educators involved with problems related to Down Syndrome. Today, it has 39 local chapters throughout Italy and a central headquarters in Rome.

The Bergamo chapter was founded in September 2004 by a group of families with the purpose of promoting the social, intellectual and expressive development of trisomic persons. We intend to achieve this objective by helping families to face and solve the problems linked to the birth of a child with Down Syndrome, providing education and helping these children enter the school system and the larger society.

Likewise, we want to promote research and study of the most suitable interventions for the development of their potential. To do this, we offer responsible collaboration in preparing programs and development plans to legislative bodies, regional governments and local agencies.

We also intend to organize every activity to favor the insertion of all persons with Down Syndrome in society and the work place, encourage their integration at all levels and organize projects to support independent living.

The association has no for-profit activities, even indirect, and its sole purpose is to provide solidarity and assistance to persons with Down Syndrome and their families, whether they are members or not.
